Sunlight and Health in the 21st Century RICHARD HOBDAY |
Press ReviewsBOOK REVIEWSUNLOVERS - Winter 1999We naturalists and the rest of the world as well, have been told by the experts for the last ten years or so that sunbathing can cause skin cancer and aging, and it is dangerous to get a suntan. "You may be completely unaware," say the publishers, "as Richard was when he began research for this book, that in the right hands sunshine is medicine. Throughout history it has been used to prevent and cure a wide range of diseases, and a few doctors still use its therapeutic effects to good value." So we naturists were right all the time! Although it's not as simple as that, "The Healing Sun" does propose that sunlight can alleviate diseases such as cancers of the breast, colon, prostate and ovaries; heart disease and multiple sclerosis; and osteoporosis. It also states quite clearly that the risks of these diseases are actually far greater than the risks of skin cancer because of too much sunlight. We already know to our cost that modern people live in smoky cities, in artificially heated houses, and that, as a nation, we suffer badly from SAD - a winter depression caused by lack of sun. So every naturist should read this book, and with a minimum of care, enjoy the sunshine, with its health giving properties, of the rest of his or her natural life. Ask for it in your local bookshop.
